The Curry Mile is a culinary staple of life at Xaverian College. Falafel is a firm favourite amongst the rich variety of dishes on offer beloved by both staff and students alike. With this, we invite you to embark on a quest with us to the seek the best falafel on Wilmslow Road.

In this weekly column, Falafel Friday will aim to fairly rate different restaurants based on five different criteria: value, taste, portion size, proximity to college and in house vibes as well as an overall rating.

Our first destination in this series is the aptly named “Falafel” restaurant with its bright green illuminated sign directing you to deliciousness. Their falafel wrap is priced at a reasonable £4.50 which, when you see the variety of topping on offer, seems to be fantastic value for money. The value for money certainly became apparent when we unwrapped the goods to see a very generous portion. A large pitta filled to the brim with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, hummus, chilli sauce, tahini, and yoghurt with four balls of falafel all for this price is a delicious bargain. Its safe to say that this establishment values customer satisfaction.

With its neon sign able to be seen from Ward Hall, the proximity to campus is easy and convenient combined with only a short waiting time after ordering making this location perfect for the ever busy student who is always rushing around but till deserves a good meal. Perhaps where it falters however, is the in house vibes. An interesting choice of green walls and furniture certainly sparked some conversation as we ate but the handwashing facilities and friendly staff overpower any décor. Realistically, for falafel this good, you would eat it in a broom cupboard.

Finally, the taste. The first bite is undoubtably the most important and it absolutely hit. While some more chilli may have been in order, the blend and ratios between each ingredient was well balanced coordinating a very solid flavour. Equally, the last bite is very important and I’m afraid to say it fell a bit flat. The end of this wrap did fall apart in our hands, crumbling much like a sad, wet biscuit leaving us grieving, having to watch our dreams turn to dust before our eyes. Melodrama aside, this was a high achiever, one to watch, a rising star, a very tasty wrap.
