We’ve got a slightly longer break than we’re used to, are you fearful of being bored this summer? To try to avoid this, I’ve found a few ideas to keep us entertained until we’re back to schedules and alarms.
Shopping on a budget:
The majority of students will agree that it’s difficult to balance the feeling of fulfillment that shopping gives us with the need to save money. Car boot sales and charity shops seem the best way to go. Popular car boot sales include:
- The Burnage Rugby Club weekly car boot sale (every Sunday from May to September from as early as 6am to 12:30) – they have a website where they share specific information ( Car Boot – Burnage RFC )
- Rummage in the Range (from Saturday the 6th of July 10am to 3pm with a £2 entry fee) – they also have a Facebook page.
More places like these can be found on the ‘Manchester’s finest’ website – Find the best restaurants, bars and things to do in Manchester (manchestersfinest.com)
Picnics and walks:
- For those who live in or around Didsbury, or are willing to travel, the Fletcher Moss Gardens are always a first choice for a stroll beside the Mersey, or a picnic in the fields – a bonus to this is you can visit the various cafes in Didsbury Village. I recommend Cafe Nero or even Expo Lounge if you’re looking for somewhere to have lunch.
- The Castlefield Viaduct – many of our fellow students have enjoyed visiting here for a walk around. It is an old railway that is now used as a garden.
- Abney Hall Park (Cheadle) – I always choose Abney Cafe for refreshments when I visit there with friends and family.
Additions to your personal statements before September?
- Unifrog gives students the opportunity to complete MOOC’s (online courses) linked to a massively wide range of subjects – these are a fantastic opportunity to set yourself apart from the other students applying to your first choice University. Unifrog – The universal destinations platform.
- Unifrog also has a section below each subject entailing what is often recommended to read/ watch/ listen to in relation to the subject. Doing some wider reading in relation to your chosen subject will exemplify your interest and dedication to it in your statement.
- There are volunteering opportunities on the Manchester Community Central website, or charity shops often take on people our age. Welcome to Manchester Community Central | Manchester Community Central
Music:
- If you don’t mind spending a bit extra, The Deaf Institute holds both concerts and party nights for as little as £14, so I would recommend looking at their website for any interesting gigs.
Note: Ourpass, StudentBeans and Unidays constantly share offers exclusively for students, they also have giveaways that are worth looking out for. For example, Pizza Express has a deal of 25% off Sunday-Friday through Unidays.
Hopefully, this provided a few more ideas for what to do this summer.
